OK, so I am thinking of moving from Minnesota to Nashville. But... I am phobic of bugs, especially spiders. and my husband is allergic to bees. What is the general bug population like (types, etc.) and would I need to use extermination services regularly? Thanks

Someone can control bugs and things being in the house to a large degree, but if bugs are bees are a prime concern this isn't the place for you.

A high mountainous area would probably be your best bet.

I moved here from Minnesota about twenty five years ago.

Lots of bugs here, at least partly because there's no extended sub-freezing winter to kill them off.

Keep in mind you won't be spending all of your time at home, but also at workplaces -- mine has spiders pretty regularly -- and outdoors.

Wasp killers (aka cicada killers) still freak me out a little. If you're phobic, *don't* google them.

If you're looking for a warmer climate, in most places the tradeoff will be more bugs.

I live in a subdivision where the houses are pretty close together, and I have a "bug man" come 4X a year and I really am not bothered by many bugs. We do have some bumble bees but they are just doing their job in the garden. But yes, I'd say the further South you go, the more bugs. At least we don't have flying cockroaches like I had in Sarasota, FL!

We have a lot of bugs down here. Pest control is necessary, but it doesn't mean you will never see them.

They say you are never more than 2 feet away from a spider at any given moment, and here, I believe it.

We also have cave crickets. Don't Google those either.

Lol, clearly what folks find to be a lot of bugs is relative. AZ has lots of bugs but Nashville seems to have minimal and the ones that are here are not aggressive. Meaning the bees are not Africanized like they are in AZ so they pretty much mind their own business. Of course if your hubby is allergic he needs an epipen with him at all times (but this is true no matter where you live). Come visit in the spring and see what you think. Only you can really know what too many bugs looks like.

EEK! What are cave crickets?

Ok. I have two dogs that like and need to burn energy by running in the yard. What do I need to know about bugs for them besides tick and flea prevention? Ihate those applications. My dogs always act sickly a couple of days after applying them.

Gotta tell ya, it's the snakes that freak me out even more

I am from PA and never seen spiders like the ones in TN. I am on the Cumberland Plateau and I have seen wolf spiders as big as my hand running around my garden. There are black widows and brown recluse spinning webs everywhere.
You really need to address your spider phobia professionally.

There are also a large variety of insects here in TN.
