Kansas, with singer John Elefante replacing original vocalist Steve Walsh for the band's 2nd and 3rd albums of the '80s, Vinyl Confessions (1982) and Drastic Measures (1983).
Meanwhile, Steve Walsh formed Streets, a band with an edgier if plainer sound than Kansas. Streets recorded 1st (1983) and Crimes In Mind (1985). Streets' line-up included future Kansas bassist Billy Greer.
Steve Walsh returned to Kansas with Power (1986), an album that also featured new lead guitarist Steve Morse of Dregs — and now Deep Purple — fame. Kerry Livgren was gone, but Kansas' other guitarist Rich Williams was still onboard, and Billy Greer replaced Dave Hope. Robbie Williams was also absent, and for the first time since the band's inception, there was no violin on a Kansas record.
Incidentally, Walsh and Morse are the only two band members seen in the video for "All I Wanted," which became the band's fourth Top 20 hit.

Steve Walsh also had a solo album in 1980 (reference post #7425) which was something of a departure from Kansas, also notable as being panned by critics as a really bad album cover.

I like Schemer Dreamer's cover. It sounds much closer to Kansas than Streets, too. That's awesome that you saw Kansas in their prime.
Oh Hell Yea!! Lol, I just got my Blast From the Past for today. Slade. ...I really liked their Heavy Metal , (from the feature toon) as well. The theme to the most awesome story in the montage. The Pacific Bomber and the island of the dead. Lol, Takin' a Ride....
