Punk/New Waver here. I remember hearing the Pistols and Ramones in the late 70's. I turned 13 in 1980. Next thing you knew, I was all about Joy Division, Klaus Nomi, Iggy, Damned, Gang of Four, Siouxsie. Then in college, New Order (Ian .. sniff sniff), Smiths, then in grad school, Charlatans, Stone Roses, Happy Mondays ... I couldn't tell you what's popular now.
I do have to admit, I have some guilty pleasure music, love songs Guns n Roses, Europe, .38 Special, Rundgren, Canned Heat. Shhhh, don't tell anyone, they'll take away my punk rocker card.
Me too an 80's new wave guy and it's still my favorite music.
Public Image Limited. Blancmange, Ministry. Depeche Mode, The Cure Morrissey, Bauhaus, The Pixies, B-52's, The Clash.... and my favorite, they never hit it big but they made the best music of the 80s The Chameleons.
A lot is written about Katrina and the Waves as being a one-hit wonder, and in the US they were, depending on how one defines "hit". This made it to #37. "Do You Want Crying?"
