Another song about Paris, LA's Shark Island, "Paris Calling", from 1989. My wife and a couple friends saw them at The Whisky that year while I was away at Nellis AFB.
More than any other decade, the 80's was more about image, fashion, appearance, etc. than music. Lots of non-musicians got put into the musical spotlight by various financiers and supporters to ride the new fashion-pop train. That's why there were so many one-hit wonders. Most weren't musicians, and were not accustomed to traditional musician requirements (touring, songwriting, maintaining a career in music, etc.) They were sort of props used by others to cash in, and when the attention faded in the ever-changing environment, they were discarded as dispensable. MTV was full of those types...
