I think part of it depends on definitions. Just what is rock'n'roll...where do you draw the line? Much of what Bill Haley did sounds a lot like jump blues, or even swing with an electric guitar prominent. I agree with BigSwede that rock'n'roll existed earlier than Chuck Berry's records. Not to muddy the waters, but when did rock'n'roll become rock? Both questions are difficult to answer definitively.
