I've posted this one before, but it's an obscure, almost unknown tune originally recorded by Stan Kenton. The tune is "Interlude," written by Kenton arranger Pete Rugolo, with lyrics by Bob Russell. It has only been recorded a very few times, and only twice that I've found with vocal. This was the first, and best, with June Christy singing the lyrics and Pete Rugolo himself conducting the orchestra. The arrangement is interesting, almost haunting. Absent are the typical trumpets and saxophone sections of the time (recorded in 1956)--only rhythm section, flutes, strings, and French horns featured behind Ms. Christy--who sings splendidly here. An interesting lyric for the era, as well, speaking of a love affair (possibly illicit), with emotions running from happy to sad to poignant. It could be two-hour movie wrapped into a four-minute tune. Why this hasn't been more popular, I don't know--a captivating tune, lyric, and arrangement that still sounds fresh over a half-century after it was recorded. Several first-rate jazz musicians who enjoyed long and noteworthy careers were among the personnel who performed on this recording--Bud Shank on flute, Red Callender on bass, Howard Roberts on guitar, and Irv Cottler on drums, among others. A great intro to the the "cool" West Coast jazz of the 1950's.
