Bob Dylan, the master thief, strikes again. As he stated in a Rolling Stone interview recently, it's about working within the art form. I would love to be a fly on the wall around him, to see how deep his musical tastes plunge. To wit, I am listening to an independent radio station a few days ago, and I hear this obscure bluegrass song from 1936, from someone by the name of Arthur Smith, named "Chitlin Cookin Time in Cheatam County":
Anyone who has more than a cursory knowledge of Bob Dylan realizes the chords to this song immediately. From his 1983 album "Infidels", he left off one of his best songs "Blind Willie McTell". Now I realize, the song's chord structure was effectively plagiarized, almost verbatim:
Every time I hear the beginning of that stupid "Hippie Chick" song I think to myself, "oh goodie, The Smiths!" Then my elation is crushed as it becomes clear that it's the stupid "Hippie Chick" song.
