Had seen pieces of it back in the 70s or early 80s on the independent channel's 9 o'clock movie and then ordered it a few months ago. How can one find any fault in a Hitchcock movie especially when its purpose for me is to give me some brief escapism.
on Friday. Had started it last Friday as part of my Horror night. The thing about sitting down for a movie on the sofa is not to expect too much out of the movie except for its escapism, though some are better than others, of course (see below). Sure, this one is old, the sets as things on a string, but the lead man was gorgeous and in the end, the "Dr. Smith" did die and most horrorably, too!
I'll say one thing for the flick in that with this one, you aren't really sure who is going to buy it. Sure, they might have done more for character development for you are introduced to people who you never see again, but in this flick, that works. It's old, it's B&W, but it's fun.
It seems the true lovers of Dr. Who rake this one over the coals, but I loved it for if it is any indication, I didn't want to leave it to go check something on the net. Paul Darrow is at his wonderful best and the "Andromeda" scenes with Peri are better than sex! Maybe those are the reasons why it is raked in that people don't know how to enjoy the forbidden pleasures that a movie can deliver. In any event, wonders can be done with a good villain and Paul Darrow excels at that.
"First Man"
Very interesting
One movie where I thought the sound was VERY effective
Not typical look at men in space program and certainly not as user friendly as "Hidden Figures" or "Apollo 13" or even Chazelle's "Gravity"
My husband was bored more than involved--
I thought Gosling was amazing---
And Claire Foy was very good in a part that called for lot of restraint--but her eyes speak volumes
I think people will be disappointed in this film because they are expecting something like "Apollo 13" or "Space Cowboys"
It is better than "A Star is Born" but maybe that is because Cooper is not as good a director--
His performance is as strong as Goslings -- just different scope
Or The Right Stuff (1983).
Loved Claire Foy in this, and everything I've seen her in to date ( Unsane (2018), The Crown (2016), Wolf Hall (2015), Upstairs Downstairs (2010) ). I never knew that about Armstrong's family.
