We saw Hotel Transylvania 3 today with our 5.5 yr old grandson
My husband and I were bored---I think grandson liked it ok
I guess I was surprised that it had such a strong message about xenophobia
Maybe I noticed it more because of the current political presence in the WH but it's there--in the movie--
Spoiler
We saw the rerun of the first one on cable recently and while The antipathy to humans exists, it just didn't seem that the "villagers" who were responsible for killing Drac's wife were the harsh enemy Van Helsing in 3 was. Yes, he tried to kill Drac numerous times at the beginning of 3--
Like Coyote/Road Runner montage--but Drac plays it cool, laughs it off, and would be happy to just ignore Van Helsing--
Of course in the timeline of movie fantasy---this had to have happened before Drac met his wife or had Mavis--
Which makes for an interesting dichotomy
Spoiler
Van Helsin manages to survive the last death and become a weird composite of man/machine live longer than a human's normal lifespan and raises his great granddaughter to see Dracula as her nemesis. She promises to kill him to revenge the still-alive Van Helsing...
The fact that Van Helsin himself has become a monster escapes his and his great-grand's notice until right at the end...not to mention the fact they are running their cruise ship apparently only with the aid of talking fish that walk on their tails....a variation of "monster" IMO...
I just wonder if Jared and Ivanka will take their kids to see it and what they wll say if the kids ask questions...
Hostiles starring Christian Bale and Wes Studi (as a dying Cheyenne chief)
Christian Bale is one of my favorite actors. He seems to be able to play any role convincingly, and that is definitely true in his role as an Army Captain in 1892, who is tasked by none other than President Harrison, (via his commanding officer) to escort his former mortal enemy to his final resting place, from New Mexico internment to Valley of the Bears, Montana.
A very bloody and violent movie, not gratuitous violence, but a lot of people end up dead. Stunning scenery and a strong supporting cast.
Score: 8/10.
I'm watching this now - I agree with everything you said.
It's a delightful little diversion provided one doesn't let prejudice (what a Star Wars Ripoff! or a candidate for MST3K) mar their enjoyment of it. One good thing about it is that it had enough character development that one actually got to caring about the players.
And, of course, a delicious villain. A movie can go a long way if the villain decent.
