John Williams is my absolute favorite. I actually credit him with sparking my interest (many, many years ago) with film scores - leading me to discover other historic greats like Rosa and to better appreciate folks like Elfman.

I have some choices for individual films, like Vangelis for The Year of Living Dangerously and Blade Runner, but overall my favorite is Carter Burwell. Brilliant work with the Coen Bros, particularly Raising Arizona. But his range is pretty broad too, from Where The Wild Things Are to In Bruges to Velvet Goldmine. He's very subtle, very understated, never too intrusive, and he knows how to be humorous too. I'd aspire to his sensibilities. This is a very intelligent film composer.

I'd have to say it's a tossup between Williams and John Barry. I still think the Goldfinger soundtrack is wonderful.

That's who I was going to say too! I love his Twin Peaks score even now all these years later.

Many of my favorites have already been mentioned.
I esp. liked Herrmann's The Day the Earth Stood Still & The Ghost & Mrs Muir scores.

Someone mentioned Giorgio Moroder...what about some early John Carpenter?

And Goblin?

Not too bad for 'cheesy' horror flicks, eh?
