Maurice Jarre hands down. Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago, A Passage to India. Some of the most beautiful scores of all time.

I love the story told by Dirk Bogard when they were trying to sell the film Death In Venice to the US market.

After watching it the film executives looked a bit puzzled but one asked who the composer was and was told it was Gustav Mahler.

We need to sign him up was the reply.

Ennio Moricone, Bernard Herrmann, James Newton Howard, Clint Mansell, and Philip Glass are definitely my faves. I've watched films just to hear their score. I think the Qaatsi films wouldn't have nearly the impact they do without Philip Glass. I think the same goes for Aronofsky's The Fountain if it weren't for Clint Mansell. And, although I love Hitchcock AND San Francisco, Vertigo wouldn't be what it is without Bernard Herrmann.

Philip Glass.
Clint Mansell (I agree that The Fountain owed a lot to his score -and to the cinematography-).
Maurice Jarre.
Michel Legrand.
Elmer Bernstein.

Mine's Angelo Badalamenti, he does most of the David Lynch films. Very haunting music.
