All of the Roger Corman-directed & Richard Matheson-scripted AIP adaptations of Edgar Allan Poe's work would be my '60s selections for their chilling atmosphere and content, with The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971) and its follow-up Dr. Phibes Rises Again (1972), Tales from the Crypt (1972) and its follow-up Vault of Horror (1973), and The Omen (1976) and Damien: Omen 2 (1978) rounding out my picks for 1970s horror cinema. This is just my take on the subject, so feel free to agree or disagree with it however comfortable you feel doing so. Thanks for your indulgence and patience. Martin1973 February 4, 2009
2) The Guillotine. I remember it but can't seem to find any info on the web about it. Anyone else remember this? Black & white.
Not sure if I am thinking about the same movie as you but was it Two on a Guiilotine? It was a black & white movie made in 1965. It starred Cesar Romero and Connie Stevens.
Cesar played a magician. He accidentally kills his wife (Connie Stevens) while performing a guillotine act. Fast forward to 20 years later and his daughter (Connie Stevens again) is notified that he died. His will stipulated that she must spend a certain period of time in the house in order for her to collect the money.
I haven't seen this movie in years. I saw it when I was a little kid when it was on the late, late, late show on tv.
There is another old scarey movie I saw when I was little on the late, late, late show. I can barely remember it but it had Will Geer and I think Agnes Moorehead was in it too. It took place either on a farm or an old plantation. It was probably made in the late 60s or early 70s. Anyone remember it?
For me there's a difference between enjoyable suspense and deep terror.
Alien and Aliens, my favorite love to be startled suspenseful movies.
The Exorcist - terrifying. My friend took the back way home through the country and made strange noises and I started to cry (I am not a cryer!)
The Omen - having been through the Exorcist I was a little smarter - I just got up and left.
Basically anything with evil spirits, especially satanic evil spirits - I just don't do, I can't enjoy it.
So there may be others on the list - but I haven't seen them.
I freak at night when you have the windows open and a storm or the wind kicks up and all the curtains start to blow around and things start to feel creepy.......

I never heard of it, but here it is, "Dear Dead Delilah"
Wow, that's it. Thanks. Out of curiosity I would like to rent it to watch the whole thing uncut. When it was on tv years ago I could tell they cut scenes out.
