The 1960's - Psycho

The 70's - The Exorcist. But I agree that Alien and Jaws were also pretty scary.

The thing about Mark of the Devil, Black Christmas & The Town That Dreaded Sundown is that you were scared sh!$less before you even had your hand in the popcorn. And you stayed that way the entire movie & long after.

Mark of the Devil was hailed at the time as being "The most horrific movie ever made".

Black Christmas was Rated X (Not for Sex) in some countries around the globe (U.K. for one). When I saw it in Wisconsin on its original release date it was Rated X. Later tamed to an R in the U.S I believe. Stayed X in the U.K. It also inspired John Carpenter to write Halloween. In fact many critics say that you can't see Halloween without 1st seeing Black Christmas because all of the inspiration came from it. Camera angles, mood, certain themes, etc...

Exorcist, The Omen, Amnityville Horror are all on my list too.
I also would add Christine, Cujo, and Rosemary's baby.

I agree with you 100% SlickRick ......on both picks and the Exorcist being the scariest.

What's the Matter with Helen with Debbie Reynolds, Shelly Winters and Dennis Weaver - something about it just freaked me out.

The movie that scared me the most as a kid in the 70's was Burnt Offerings:

Burnt Offerings (1976)

Also, The Amityville Horror....

Slasher type movies don't scare me, but something like the Exorcist or The Ring(Japanese version) scare me.

Jaws 2. Completely inferior to the original, but still fun.

Carrie

The Island of Dr. Moreau (1977 version with Michael York and Burt Lancaster)

The Omen.

The Shining and Carpenter's version of The Thing are indeed great movies, but both of them came out in the '80s.
Yes; the suspense in that was unbearable!
When Tom Skerritt was down in that air shaft, I thought I would come out of my skin!
And don't forget The Stepford Wives; that was like watching my first marraige. Really scary.
