Has anyone seen this Elia Kazan movie from the late 1950s? It was Andy Griffith's first performance and also features Patricia Neal, Walter Matthau, and a young Lee Remick. In my opinion, this movie is way ahead of its time, and a connection can easily be drawn between the subject matter and recent U.S. politics.

Yes, my local art house theater ran it last year, and it was fabulous!

There are far too many to mention. What type of movies are you looking for? Comedies, noir, suspense, drama, war movies, crime thrillers, Westerns, science fiction, etc.? Any specific subjects or topics that particularly interest you?

Give me some idea of what you'd like to watch and I'll suggest some classic movies for you.

I go by actors whom I like rather than genre. Humphrey Bogart comes to mind. Then there are Gary Grant, Anthony Quinn, Burt Lancaster. And the actresses were great. Brigitte Bardot, Sophia Loren. All their movies have good story lines.

I tried looking for "A Face in the Crowd" on youtube. No luck. Which site streams these old classics?

Amazon has it available for streaming for $2.99. Netflix disc rental, which you still have to use if you want to watch many older or more obscure movies, also has it.

$2.99? Those are old movies and some are even in black and white. People who like those movies are practically all dead and gone along with those actors of their time. I am only 45 and like those movies. I thought I could get to watch for free.

I love Face in the Crowd! First saw it on TCM about 10 years ago. Griffith did a great job of playing an unlikable character.

Probably the easiest way to find films by old actors and actresses is to look them up on IMDB or Wikipedia; their biographical entries will generally include a list of their major films. You'll find lots of treasures that way.

I assume you've seen Cary Grant's screwball comedies? Bringing Up Baby, My Favorite Wife, and His Girl Friday are wonderful. Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House hasn't aged as well, but is still fun. And of course there are his two films with Alfred Hitchcock: Suspicion and Notorious, which are must-sees.

Have you seen Robert Mitchum's work? Out of the Past, Cape Fear, and The Night of the Hunter are all excellent.

Turner Classic Movies and The Criterion Channel are probably your best sources for streaming old movies. But a significant number of them are only available on DVD, which makes subscribing to NetFlix's DVD rental service to be worthwhile.

No, old movies are still very popular! Serious film buffs love them. No doubt some decent films are available to stream on the free services, but you'll have to look hard to find what you want to watch, as films generally don't stay on the free services for long. You'll have better luck finding the good ones on paid/subscription streaming services.

Happy hunting!
