It's a bit sad when you think about it. Andy Griffith was a great actor who never completely fulfilled his potential (how much of that was due to being typecast as a result of The Andy Griffith Show, I don't know). Burt Reynolds was similar: we think of him mostly as the star of dopey movies like Smokey and the Bandit, but if you watch him in Deliverance and Boogie Nights, you see a whole different dimension. It's like he's a completely different person in those films.

Yes, you're right! The versatility and depth these two actors displayed rather than just playing one type. I wonder if Jodie Foster every played a villain. Not someone "conflicted" but truly a villain in any of her movies. I'm not saying she hasn't. Just wondering if she ever did.

I loved it. Andy Griffith was terrifyingly great in the role. I always wondered what would have happened if became a dramatic actor instead of Mayberry and Matlock. The movie was directed by Elia Kazan, written by the fantastic Bud Schulberg with Patricia Neal, Anthony Franciosa, Lee Remick (most beautiful eyes ever), Walter Matthau. They certainly don't make them like this anymore.
