Yeah, and I grew up in eastern New Mexico, so I rolled my eyes a lot in Rainman. But you and I aren't "average viewers" --- at least when it comes to the geographic knowledge of the High Plains.

I agree. I just don't think it's the answer to the issue.

But when I watch a movie that is taking place in Florida, for example, and there are mountains in the background...well, that's poor film-making.

Which movie was that? Maybe it was an Asylum knockoff and they didn't have the budget to move the production.

That's like a guy in a movie exclaiming "Hello, Manhattan!" and there are palm trees all over the place!

Could be short for “Manhattan Beach”.

And it snows there, unlike the one in Nevada.

As one who lives in SoCal: Nope, that won't fly. It's referred to by both words. Also, palms dot many locales, not just SoCal.

If you want something less tainted, might consider 'The Hare and the Lion' at link above. Its in same trickster genre as Brother Rabbit stories. Plenty folktales from around the world.

Nothing particularly wrong with the Brother Rabbit stories, just the "happy simpleton slave" way of telling them. It was obviously pandering to the extreme racist attitudes of the time. You could show a black saying something wise IF you made him out to be a simpleton. Showing him as a well spoken, well educated man would not have been accepted.
