The twist ending aside, did anyone else notice that the actual object of the entire charade was never achieved? The entire point of duping the gang into attacking the docked ship was to kill the one man who could identify Kaiser Soze. After all the complicated doings involved in getting the gang out west, getting them to attack the ship, the one person left alive at the end of all the carnage is the old guy who can identify Kaiser Soze. And he is still alive and in the hospital when the film ends. And he has provided the FBI with a physical description.
What's so great about The Usual Suspects ? Kevin Spacey.

What the whatting what?
He died, didn't he? Off camera. Didn't we see a look of terror on his face? That's what I remember. Maybe I have to watch it again.

There was no depiction of his death, he was still alive when last seen. But that does not matter because even if he had died, before he did so he provided the authorities with a physical description of Kaiser Soze (the one which got faxed to the interrogators a few seconds late.
The whole elaborate plan's main object was to kill the one person who could provide a description of Soze. It failed.

Söze got away though. And is Verbal really Söze? Or was that just another misdirection?
Soze's object was to eliminate this one man before he could provide a physical description of him. He got away having failed in his object. A picture of Kaiser Soze was now in the hands of law enforcement officials.
