My wife and I often have discussions about why one of may enjoy a movie more than the other. Sometimes it's pretty obvious, women don't generally care for Monty Python or South Park, but other times it gets kind of deep and philosophical. I really like movies that make you think, actually both of us do, but there are certain movies that a lot of people would consider "chick" flicks that I like more than she does, in fact some of them she can barely tolerate.
Some of these were not seen by a lot of people, but if you're any kind of movie fan at all, we both recommend them, although my recommendation is stronger than hers.
"Love Actually". Great ensemble cast, great writing. I'm not a Hugh Grant fan, and his story line isn't the best in the movie but an overall enjoyable movie. It took my wife 2 or 3 viewings to get through the movie.
"Stage Beauty". A period piece, with some modern overtones. Clare Danes has always ranked pretty highly with me, but I'd have loved this movie even had it been Julia Roberts, just not as much.
"In America". There's a couple of scenes in here where I almost choke up a bit, but it's a beautiful story, very well told.
"A Very Long Engagement". OMG. I'm not sure how many of you saw this but if you haven't you've missed a great experience.
Anyway, give me your comments, and for gosh sakes if you haven't seen them put them in your Netflix Queue.
I remember In America, and I liked it but I'm fuzzy with the details, which means that I did not found it that important. But I'm always interested how other people see the American dream. Love Actually is not the kinda movie that I rent, but I've seen it while I was visiting relatives. I liked it, but I like About a boy more than Love Actually, at least as far as Hugh Grant movies go.
Some 'Chick flicks' I liked are: A price above rubies White Oleander Dangerous Liaisons Left Luggage Music of the heart Boys don't cry The Ron Clark Story ( no chicks or a leading lady, but a good story) Great Expectations (again no chicks or a leading lady, but a good story)
My husband HATES Love Actually and will walk out of the room if I am watching it!
He likes Bridget Jones (total chick flick!) and he's the one who bought "The Notebook". It is an awesome love story! He also likes "Sweet Home Alabama".

I really liked The Notebook, and Bridget Jones's Diary wasn't half bad either, but I was OUT on Sweet Home Alabama about halfway through. I also liked A Good Year, with Russ Crowe and the lovely Marion Cotillard. Music and Lyrics, with Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore, is good too.
I like the theory of "not really" chick flicks. Trying to carry it out might be tricky though.
Out of the OP's selections, I liked "In America" the best.
I don't think my husband or sons could deal with Love Actually, but I could be wrong. (I liked it okay.) About A Boy is great.
My son enjoyed A Very Long Engagement.
Would Stardust fit into the "not really a chick flick" category?
Would Stardust fit into the "not really a chick flick" category?
Only when you count Captain Shakespeare as a chick.
So no, Stardust is more a fairy tale. Fairy, get it? (sometimes I just kill myself with lame jokes).
Addicted to Love starring Meg Ryan and Matthew Broderick.... a "romantic comedy" with just enough revenge to keep guys interested.
