Amélie (2001) - IMDb
I love this movie, it really has to be one of my favorites.

rashomon (1950), directed by akira kurosawa and stars toshiro mifune and takashi shimura (you may remember them from the seven samurai). rashomon is unique in that the story is told in flashback by witnesses called to a murder trial and their biased and differing recollections in testimony by the bandit (mifune), the samurai (the murder victum!, yes, he tells his story via a medium performing a seance), the wife, and the woodcutter (shimura).

Russian Ark - 96 minutes long. One shot.

Incredible, eh? Sokurov was a master of logistics to get all that in one 'take'. One of the finest films ever.

The Legend of 1900
Man was born and raised on an oceanliner. The movie meanders, but there are some wonderful visual moments and some great music.

Princess Mononoke (animated feature--beautiful)
War in the forest, but like nothing you have ever seen before.

Memento A man with short-term memory loss has a lot of puzzle pieces to put together. Fast-paced and fascinating.

Donnie Darko After seeing this unusual movie, I became obsessed with its story and meaning. But that's okay because there were entire websites devoted to it, so I could pore through every detail.

Kinky Boots I think this is actually based on a true story, but it is definitely not your run-of-the-mill plot.

O Brother Where Art Thou? - One of my favorites. Shot to look sepia-toned, great character actors -- very quirky!

Edward Scissorhands - for its art direction/sets

Being John Malkovich - I liked this up to a point -- it was really different.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button -- about a man born old and dies young (haven't seen it though)

Great movies, even though Being John Malkovich sort of freaked me out a little.
