And an argument to see more movies with Joseph Cotten, a real fine actor back then.
Excellent film. I had to seek out Portrait of Jennie (1948) after a coworker highly recommended it. He was a constant source of great movies that I had never seen. There were more than a few he recommended (I followed all of his films and they never disappointed) with Joseph Cotton, such as Duel in the Sun (1946) with Jennifer Jones, Gregory Peck, Lillian Gish, Walter Huston, Herbert Marshall, Lionel Barrymore, and Orson Wells narration!

BAGDAD CAFE - SOUNDTRACK - I'M CALLING YOU - YouTube
You are not kidding.

Bagdad Cafe is one of the most unique movies out there. And one thing I like about it is that it's not syruppy sweet or cloying, but it does leave you with a very good feeling. (Amelie does too, as well as The Eighth Day, just so ya know where I'm coming from.) Many movies considered "unique" or "different" also are very dark and disturbing at some level. I don't mind a dark or sad or disturbing movie sometimes, but it's fun to find a unique and artsy movie that also leaves you with a smile on your face.

I also prefer movies that leave you feeling good. I never heard of 'Amelie' until you mentioned it, and after looking at some clips of it on Youtube, it looks like it would do just that. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.

'Portrait of Jennie' apparently didn't do to well at the theaters when it was first released, but over the years it has developed a cult following. It is a great movie.

An old movie that I've always marveled at the subject matter of (and I think that makes it unique) is The Miracle of Morgan Creek. I always thought the concept of a small-town girl, getting drunk at a farewell party for some soldiers, "marrying" someone whose name she couldn't remember, and ending up pregnant was a rather surprising for the 1940s.

I apologize if I have repeats, but these are what I consider unusual:

Liquid Sky (1982)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085852/

Orlando (1992)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107756/

Phase IV (1974)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070531/
Nowadays, they'd do the ants with CGI, creating an absolutely worthless film. That these are actual insects is amazing!

The Adventures of Mark Twain (1985)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088678/

The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926)
Die Abenteuer des Prinzen Achmed (original title)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0015532/

The Fabulous World of Jules Verne (1958)
Vynález zkázy (original title)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0052374/

The Fall (2006)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0460791/

The Year of Living Dangerously (1982)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086617/
The main reason is Linda Hunt's Best Supporting Actress Oscar-winning role as a man!

Youth Without Youth (2007)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0481797/

the films of Hayao Miyazaki
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0594503/

BTW: The idea presented in "The Truman Show" already was done in a couple of anthology series episodes, including "Twilight Zone: Special Service". It was far from an original story.

Little Otik aka Greedy Guts (2000)

Otesánek (2000) - IMDb
