I was going to until I learned that the soundtrack is comprised of modern pop-ish music. That pretty much completely ruins it for me.

I loved the one from the 1970s with Robert Redford as Gatsby. Somehow, I can't imagine that sweet little Carey Mulligan as Daisy. It sounds as if Baz Luhrmann is making a completely different type of film, especially after he relocated it to Australia.

Should be interesting.

I loathe Baz Luhrmann movies. He has the aesthetic sense for MTV and Pepsi commercials, and that's about it.

Pass.

That's not surprising considering this is Luhrmann that we're talking about.

I think he takes a lot of heat for being overkill, but hey, there's even a place for that.

I honestly don't mind it, and I'm not a huge fan of mainstream popular music right now either.

I honestly am excited to see it because of the over-the-top aesthetic of it and the fact that it's one of my favorite novels of all time. And I'm a literary guy, so I know he's probably going to totally slaughter the real point of what Fitzgerald intended, but it glamorous, overkill, roaring 20s lifestyle! Has to be good for at least a couple of hours of entertainment, lol.

I haven't seen that version. But I do know Rotten Tomatoes just totally hates it.

But what a cast, especially Sam Waterston as Nick Carraway.

Sam Waterston was, in my opinion, the ideal person to play Carraway. And I think Bruce Dern played Tom wonderfully. I have plenty of gripes about the 1974 version of The Great Gatsby, but overall I think it was decent.

The new one looks visually amazing but the music sucks. I'm a huge Baz Luhrmann fan but sometimes he just does things for the kitsch factor. Listen to the soundtrack to the 1974 version. It's great.
