Reminded me a little of True Romance, which was another slick, violent movie with an incredible cast of supporting actors. I think True Romance was a better movie.
At some points, I thought it was a little over-stylized, but it worked. I was impressed. Nice opening car "chase".
StarlaJane/quote: And I don't care how much you love a jacket:
Spoiler
when it has that much blood on it, you take it off and wash it, you don't walk around everywhere with fresh blood still on it (as well as your other clothes in which you kill people). Who does that?!
Hahaha! yes just a little over the top, thought the same thing. drop the jacket
I agree on the slickness, but can also see why someone might get a tad bored also, as a lot was focused on him in the car. A little like Resevoir Dogs, well-done movie, but found it boring in the fact that it hardly left the room. or Phone Booth, .. very boring, yawn
When there's not a lot of great movies to choose from, and need a movie fix, go for actors that interest me. then if the movie sucks, you can still enjoy, (or not), their performances. So far, have really like Ryan Gosling in what we've seen, and liked him in this movie. canadian boy actually.
Second time for seening Carey Mulligan now, and enjoyed her performances both times.
A friend mentioned they liked the Ides of March, but felt something was missing. maybe seeing Ryan Gosling as the slickster in Drive makes his perhaps, more boring character in the IoMarch movie?, a little more boring?
but I'll go and see it. George Clooney, and Ryan Gosling
of all the things in this movie that was over the top, people pick the jacket as being the most annoying one. seriously... i don't get it. i will say, though... that if you wanna be realistic, maybe having a bloody jacket was the most realistic. i mean, some woman's face just got blown off, and he just had gotten away from some ambush after some heist goes wrong. wouldn't you think that washing his jacket would be the last thing on his mind????
but anyways, i liked this movie a lot. the violence was not something i was expecting but that's what make movies great. note to others who think violence is "uncalled for": that's what movies do! they take you into a different world, that would otherwise not be capable of going into in the real world. not liking it is one thing, but when it comes to a made up fantasy world, everything and anything that is to your liking is to be called for.
i didn't think this was a beloved film that i will treasure forever, but i do consider this, as someone said, one of those trendy films that will be looked on and followed maybe at a smaller scale, like such cult classics as "true romance". its a pretty edgy flick, with larger than life characters. the villains were very graphic novel oriented, in fact, this film feels in some ways like a graphic novel. the bloody jacket, is one of those things that gives it away. also the plot twists... such as (SPOILER ALERT!!!) his neighbor's husband being involved with the very ganglords that hired him for the race, made it seem something off of a graphic novel. i mean, in a city of 3 million.... you think this is very likely to happen? anyway, the soundtrack was awesome... i think it was almost too awesome for the film. and i felt the ending wasn't very climactic, given the slow pace of the film. i wanted more of a slicker bang towards the end. that was the only thing that makes me shrug my shoulders a bit and say, "could work on some things, but not a bad film at all."

I'd see it again. For me, that's high praise.
I agree with everything you said.
Could well be wrong, but I think maybe a lot of the younger people might not know True Romance? Seems like Drive will end up being the True Romance of its generation, but I agree that TR was better.
However, what Drive *really* reminded me of was the 1967 Alain Delon film Le Samourai. Many films pay homage to this movie, and Drive is there with the rest of them.
I did love the movie's style--I saw it in blu-ray and it was beautiful, blood and all.
