You know what I was they would come out with? Longer versions of the LOTR series. Oh, wait...

The OP asked why don't DVD boxes get updated as well. I knew that I have seen instances of the box being updated before but couldn't find any specific examples until I came across this gem:

Amazon.com: BMX Bandits [Blu-ray]: Nicole Kidman, John Ley, David Argue, Brian Trenchard Smith: Movies & TV

I guarantee when it first came out that Nicole Kidman did not get top billing.

The suggestion that film credits are altered to reflect present stardom is simply ludicrous.

Michael Madssen is indeed a terrific actor; I just watched Kill Bill Vol. 1 & Vol. 2 last week, and he was terrific as always.

Changing the sequence of actors in a listing of movie credits years later is flat-out insane and 100% pointless.

Lots of actors who started in low-profile movies in barely-noticeable roles (such as Harrison Ford portraying a bellhop in the mid-sixties James Coburn film 'The President's Analyst') all had to start somewhere.

When this happens, no one bothers to re-write the credits to reflect the changes. Is this taboo or something?

A prime example is "Thelma & Louise". This is the way the credits start out:

Thelma & Louise (1991)
Director: Ridley Scott
Writer: Callie Khouri
Stars: Susan Sarandon, Geena Davis, Harvey Keitel, Michael Madsen....

Okay, um, Michael WHO? Maybe he was supposed to be an up-and-coming star. Sorry, never heard of him.
Conversely, the actor who turned out to be the biggest star from "Thelma & Louise" didn't get top billing: Brad Pitt. And he still doesn't have top billing in this film. that's because the credits have never been changed.

I'm sure there are many more similar movies whose credits seem lost in time. Why don't movie credits ever get updated... and should they?

Simple answer no. It's a waste of time and money for something not important. Hollywood needs to focus it's time on making more "better" movies.

As for Michael Madsen, he's been around for some time.

Here are a couple of his good movies.

Beyond the Law (1993)

The Getaway (1994)

The only time they do that is when they are trying to SCAM the consumer into buying the product.

Example: The short film called "Introducing Janet" that was like an Afterschool Special featured a young Jim Carrey in a small supporting role.

When it was released on video they renamed it to "RUBBERFACE!" starring Jim Carrey. They took one brief expression and that you hardly notice, and made the title based on that. And they put other pictures of him that were redone in a crazier way from what was actually on the film, and put those new pictures on the cover.
