I can see how liberal/progressives will not "get it".
My conservative friends love it, the left, not so much.
That's a bunch of horse ****. I am liberal and Ayn Rand is my favorite author. Rand was a libertarian and you can be a liberal and still understand and even agree with her philosophy as libertarian is actually a combination of liberal and conservative views.
I know a lot more people that are liberal and into her writings than I do that are conservative.
Too bad Ayn Rand didn't "walk the walk". Rand accepted both Medicare and Social Security in her old age. So much for the Libertarian thing. End of discussion.
The movie is wonderful! Saw it last night and seeing it again tonight. Yesterday, I had to drive 30 minutes to see it while today it's opening in my town. Huzzah!
The timing for Atlas Shrugged to become a movie couldn't be better! I especially hope the Obama Admiistration sees this move and takes some notes. IMHO, this country would be far better off if only Ayn Rand's socio-economic theory of Objectivism were put into practice as soon as possible, thus doing away with the current practices of socialist, nanny state, big government, re-dustribute-the-wealth-to-the-lazy-and-the-fat-and-stupid.
If thhis country continues on its current course, where lazier, dimmer, inferior people and corporations are rewarded moreso than are the true innovators and business tycoons who actually contribute to society and create jobs, Wyatt's Torch will one day burn brightly for real!
Some bad box office results for Atlas Shrugged. Even though they expanded to an additional 166 theaters this weekend, the box office is down 48% from last week. Highly unlikely this film will earn back it's modest production budget.
I have read the book several times, and been waiting, none too patiently for the movie. I saw it last week and really enjoyed it. The actors were well cast, and they followed the theme of the book well. The objectivist message was not watered down. It certainly played well with current events.
My biggest complaint was that it was too short, they cut a lot of background to fit it in the timeframe. They needed to cover more of Rearden's self made background to understand the impact of having most of his business taken from him, and the effort that went into the development of Rearden Metal to understand why it was such a big issue. The same is true of the interaction between Francisco and Dagny...too little background. Much as I normally don't like "flashbacks", this movie could have benefitted from them.
Overall, pretty well done, and if you have read the book and are a fan, it will probably appeal to you. If you've never read the book, I could see where it could be hard to follow.
I'm really hoping they do a director's cut version when it goes to DVD, with some more detail and background.
The power of Ayn Rand devotees has impressed some Hollywood distribution executives, who took note of the hefty $5,640 per-theater average scored by “Atlas Shrugged: Part 1” during its opening weekend.
“Shocking,” one executive said about the healthy business the low-budget film has been doing, considering its “awful” marketing plan.

Ummm, this is off topic; but Ayn Rand's philosophy was that of objectivism, not a libertarianism.
Perhaps it would do you good to study up as you seem to have missed an important part of your education.
