I agree, cksean. Seeing the imitation Hell's Angels on their Harleys out "profiling" does get old, though. Nothing at all against the bikes. A ride is a ride.
I love Bikes, and a few other things. But I have found that most of the things I like, are things I can do by myself. Surf, Bicycle, Skate, or ride a Scooter. I sometimes ride with a few Guys, but mostly it's just me, heading to where ever. I avoid anything that looks like gang crap. Been there done that. Not for me.
This sums up my interests in biking as well, I love to ride but I don't see the thrill in large group posing, the Hog riding Lawyers know damn good and well what they are aiming for when they arrive in town for their psuedo outlaw party theatrics. It is that image that Harley promotes, this is at the bottom of all the talk of that mysterious essence that they call the "Harley Experience". It's actually an unspoken agreement that these guys subscribe to, the "getup" that they wear is unmistakably modeled on the "outlaw biker look" of the sixties and seventies.
I had stated in my original post that I've owned and rode the hell out of Harleys in the past, they were not a very good bargain considering the cost benefit ratio that one should expect, people tell me they have changed but from what I've seen they look to be the same old bike. I know that there will be those who hang on to the "mystique and legend" aspects of owning one of these machines, but from a pure techno standpoint they just don't stack up well.
Prices are coming down for used ones. I always keep my eyes open for good deals, that I feel I can turn for a profit should I need to. ride for free, then sell for a profit, and move up a notch. when yer poor, it's the only way.
I've had many bikes in my day, but none have been as solid and reliable as my 2001 Harley. She has never let me down. Maintenance is easy, and when it needs work, that's simple too.

I know couple people that has 80,000+miles on their Sportsters...
I put 129K on a 1981 Suzuki GS1000G, and have 98K on my 1984 Honda V65 Sabre. All you have to do is take care of a bike. (That includes not totaling it, of course.)

Wow! I only use my bike for cruisin around town and going to the bar. Only 4,000 miles on my Harley. 129K, that's alot of bar hoppin'!
Someone pointed out that Harleys are over priced and cost too much. Maybe we need to look at what you get when you sell the bike.
Many police departments have stopped using Kawasakis as police bikes. When they sold them off the return was something like 3 to 5% of the purchase price.
Harley Police bikes have a 60 to 75% average resale value.
If you were to purchase a Honda VTX1300T that retails for $11,499 you would have a bike that looks similar to a Harley Davidson Road King that retails for $16,699. If you look at the numbers chances are you buy the Honda. After 5 years you could sell the Harley and have most of the money needed to buy a new harley or completly buy a new Honda. If you were to sell the Honda after five years you wouldn't have the money to buy either.
Just checked another model.
Honda Shadow Spirit 750 Retails for $6,999
Harley Sportster 883 Low Retails for $6,999
I have seen 5 year old Honda Shadows selling for $2,000 and 5 year old Harley Sportsters selling for $4,000.
