You might like the West Island, communities like Beaconsfield or Kirkland, Pointe Claire. A lot of families live there.

Have a look at the city of Montreal's website:

You can click on the "Boroughs" tab and read about the different boroughs.

Here's a list of Montreal's neighbourhoods on Wikipedia, with brief descriptions.

I'm dying to know, why Montreal?

The West island is definitively a good choice. It is safe, nice, relatively close to the center city and family oriented. There is the new Bois-franc area also located on the West island but within the St-Laurent borough. Bois-Franc is a large amazing new development that is quite unique, upscale, green, also family oriented and very well located.

What percentage of the West Island is Anglophone?

It varies according to how you define the borders of the West Island (it's not really an administrative entity - parts are small independent municipalities, others are part of the city of Montreal), but most people would say that anglos are between 40 and 50 percent of the population.

The rest of the population is divided up roughly evenly between French speakers and speakers of non-official languages.

If you need to be close to the down-town core but still want to enjoy a calm, safe, natural setting, you might want to consider Nun's Island (Ile-des-soeurs). We've been here with our 2 young kids for 4 years now, and would have a hard time leaving. In that price range, you would likely be looking at town-houses instead of fully detached homes though.
