I was looking at various google maps and was very surprised that in the suburbs of both Montreal and Quebec City, there are many pools. It would seem like 75% of the homes have pools. Most are the above ground style. My question is, with the cold climate up there, why bother having most of your yard inaccessible for 9 months of the year? Why don't you just have a hot tub or something. Also, here in Texas we have a "community pool" that is usually Junior Olympic. Wouldn't it be easier to do something like that? It just seems a waste of water and I don't understand why everyone needs a pool.

Here's an example in a northern Quebec City suburb:

In contrast, here's a neighborhood in Austin, notice how few pools, although there is a "community pool". This is in a climate where you can use a pool 7 months of a year.

Less maintenance and better facilities at the pool.

This is my neighbourhood (general vicinity anyway):

I have a backyard, in-ground heated saltwater pool.

We swim in it from early May to late September.

The province of Quebec has about a quarter of Canada's population but close to half its backyard pools.

I don't have a pool but most of my neighbors who have one will use it June to August. I heard that in the 90's there was a savvy Pool company who had a huge advertising campaign for cheap above ground pools. It snowballed from there.

Both houses I lived in growing up had backyard pools. My neighbors both had pools as well.

Ironically, the 3 houses I've lived in in Florida have not had pools, and most of my friends don't have pools either.

We also have what you call "community pools"; here they are managed by the municipalities. Pretty much every neighbourhood has one, like this one and this other one in Verdun.

I guess the reason why a lot of people have pools in Quebec is that since summer is short, we try to make the most of it and enjoy it to the fullest!

This is my guess. That and people in Quebec tend to be significantly more physically active (personal observation) compared to anywhere else in NA. The people here who have pools barely ever use them, whereas it's the complete opposite in Quebec.

A few more observations on pools....

If you look at Google Earth, you really have to get down into the southermost regions of the U.S. to find as great a prevalence of pools as you have in Quebec. Think Florida, Arizona and Southern California.

Even in a city like Atlanta, GA in the suburbs there aren't nearly as many pools as in Quebec.

For the same reason, we have skis, skates, snowshoes, even though we can't use them for 8-9 months of the year.

This may be a cliché but I do think people here also like entertaining a bit more than other North Americans do, and it's actually really nice having friends and/or family over by the poolside during the summer.

Another thing that's noteworthy is that pretty much anywhere in Quebec you have access to a multitude of lake and river beaches with warm and clean summer water. It's not like some places (Arizona?) where there aren't many natural water features where you can go for a dip.

That also might point to entertaining as being one of the reasons we have all these pools here.
