What is the job market like in Montreal? I've heard that Anglophones have a tough time finding good paying jobs in Montreal. As an American how tough would it be to get a job in Montreal?

Depends on what job you are looking for,Many jobs will ask for bilingual candidates but if they want your skill set bad enough language wont be an issue.

Pretty bad for Anglophones. I believe you need to have connections to get a good job.
I know two Anglophone immigrants who have good-ish jobs here in Montreal. One works in finance for an Anglophone university. The other one has comp sci master's and is super talented. He's doing programming for Yellow Pages.
You can find odd jobs. But you only get minimum wage or similar. It's doable if being young and broke is kinda your phase right now.
If you're older and wanting to start a family, forget about it. Pretty much all Anglophone people, not just immigrants, that I know are living at poverty level, doing odd jobs.
addition : also, sometimes it's not really about whether you can speak French or not. If you don't have a Quebecois family name or you don't speak the Quebecois variety of French, they will consider you as an outsider and will not hire you.

.
I gather you mean by this "anglophone ONLY" people (ie people who speak little to no French)...
including the anglophones who grew up here and think that they can speak French but don't.
including the allophone immigrants who speak English just fine but their French is half-ass and then they give up (most Chinese, Indian, Philppino, Iranian immigrants).

Soon to be living in Brampton, Markham, Surrey and Richmond?
However, to be fair though, a lot of them did stay, which is an indication that it's still feasible to make a living without advanced knowledge of French in Montreal. But most of these people are very blue collar.
