I am relocating from Pittsburgh, land of the cheapest housing ever. I am interested in opinions. The job is in South Salinas. I will be running a clinic there. Kind opinions are appreciated.

As I mentioned earlier there is no lack varied local opinions when it comes to towns like Salinas. Some absolutely hate it, while others are ok living in certain nicer parts of the city. I have coworkers who live or have lived in South Salinas. And while not their first choice it was an affordable option and they are ok with it. Would some move if they could? Yes. Do they feel threatened daily by gun carrying gang members? No. But yes, crime does happen there, especially gang on gang shootings. If you go to work there during the day and take care of your own business you should be fine. To feel more comfortable you may consider living just outside Salinas in places like Marina. Do you have children? That's an important consideration if you do because of the schools. Otherwise renting in South Salinas may be ok for a limited time to see what you think. Or to play it really safe drive in from somewhere else like Monterey. A good close option is Las Palmas or Toro Park areas - South of River Rd./Reservation.

Thank you so much MtnSurfer..I have an adult daughter that will be moving with me in May (along with two cats). The trouble I am having is just finding a sublet or temporary place to stay that is reasonable until I figure the rest out. The crime rate in Pittsburgh is actually high, but like all towns, common sense and not being in certain areas at certain times is the way to go. I just lived in NYC for a month to volunteer with the Red Cross for Hurricane Sandy relief...I feel like I can adapt to anything.
