There are many, many other cities where the average person can join an old, established group, be elected mayor, etc..,

BUT, why are the older societies "closed" except to the elite, monied "old" Mobile families. Can see nothing has really changed..

And That has happened in Mobile. Mobile elected its first black mayor and he ran for two terms. Mardi Gras is an whole other beast all together and a lot has changed that's why there are dozens of other Mardi Gras societies that have been established for that exact same reason. There even dozens of LGBT societies in the city. And if you really knew the history of majority of Mobile's 150+ year old Mystic Sociaties then you would know that a lot if them are MASONIC in nature. So can't just anyone join them. They even perform MASONIC like rituals at the balls. And that applies to any city that has celebrated Mardi Gras for over 100 years which would be the entire Gulf Coast. So the old Mardi Gras mystic societies are deeper than what you think. The old ones are truly secret societies that have MASONIC ROOTS and no one knows who they are but the members. There are literally over 130 Mardi Gras societies and about 70 of them parade. There are several choices to choose .

I applaud Mobile for electing Sam Jones, but that doesn't mean it is easy, or in many cases even possible, for newcomers to break into "social circles" in Springhill or the older Mardi Gras societies. How many Mardi Gras Kings or Queens have come from these "other" societies?

Out of the 130 + societies I would say 80% of them have kings and queens. For an example the Order of Doves is a newly revived society and the membership is open to any one. The Conde Cavaliers is the same way those are just 2 that come off the top of my head. And they are well respected and throw elaborate balls that are also open to the public. The King and Queens are elected by service and what they have done for the community.

Instead of trying to make 33 year-old narratives fit this opinion, perhaps you should try to learn what has happened since then.

I'm referring to Societies such as MOTs and OOMs. Mobile has a large minority population. How diverse is the membership at Mobile Country Club?

Lizap wins the "Moves to a suburb; still incredibly 'worried' about diversity" award

Perhaps this needs to be reposted:

Instead of trying to find things that only fit your narrative, try looking for actual evidence.
