A TERRIBLE CRIME

Robert Rouse, a young farmer, escorted Miss Bettie Hayden to church, and on their way home shot her through the head, leaving her by the roadside, while he drove about 3 miles and then killed himself by shooting. It seems that the young woman had refused to marry him. Her wound was regarded as fatal. Both the murderer and his victim belonged to the best families in Morgan county.

TWO SHOT IN KC HOLD-UP

Kansas City, Kan., Apr 23---William Lowery, 18, and George Plummer, 40, were shot here today when they resisted an attempt to rob them of $9,000 which they were taking from the Armourdale State Bank to Joe Howard's confectionery store to cash packing house employee's pay checks.
The money was being transferred in a small car when a larger car drove up alongside and two highwaymen ordered the men to stop. Instead of stopping, Lowery, who was driving the small car, stepped on the gas. The highwaymen opened fire and Lowery was shot in the hip while Plummer was shot in the arm. With the big car in pursuit the men never stopped, but raced to Howard's store where they delivered the money. The bandits escaped in the direction of Kansas City, Mo.

SALOON ROBBERY SUSPECTS ARRESTED

Crouched in the ice box into which he had been forced to crawl by three robbers who covered him with revolvers, Thomas Prevallet, a bartender employed in John Busenhart's saloon, No. 1847 North Broadway, watched the highwaymen while they leisurely locked the door and then robbed the cash register and cigar case, a few minutes after 5 o'clock yesterday morning.
Richard M Kerley, son of Doctor Richard M Kerley, former superintendent of the Female Hospital, and Hugh Landy, alias Cody, were arrested by Special Officers George Greeley and Degnan of the Fifth District, several hours after the robbery. Both have been identified by Prevallet.
Kerley was arrested at the home of his father, No. 4626 Easton avenue. Landy was taken into custody while in a saloon at Sixth and Poplar streets.
Prevallet told police the robbers ordered him to crawl into the ice box. While one robber guarded the door the other two emptied the cigar case and took $7.20 from the cash register. Prevallet could see what was going on by peeking through a window in the ice box.
After the robbers left, Prevallet began shouting for help as he was freezing inside the ice box.
Private Watchman Charles Dodge was passing by, heard Prevallet screaming, and let him out. They both went to the Fifth District to report the robbery and give police descriptions of the bandits.
