TRAMPS WORK SMOOTH TRICK

The Protective Association, an anti-horse-thief society at St. Joseph, discovered that it had been hoodwinked by a smooth gentleman of the genus hobo.
They found that horses are systematically stolen and hidden in the woods near that city until a reward sufficient in size to suit the thief has been offered and the animals are returned through the instrumentality of another person, of course.
More than 100 horses have been stolen in that section during the last six months, and it was while making a protracted search for one of the thieves that the discovery was made.

ANOTHER ROBBERY NEAR FOUR COURTS

Highwaymen last night committed another robbery within a block and a half of the Four Courts.
William Poole of No. 3939 Finney avenue, a timekeeper for a World's Fair contractor, was the victim, the footpads took $62 from him.

The robbery was committed at the mouth of the alley on the north side of Walnut street between Tenth and Eleventh streets.
Poole was walking west, having just left a theatre. When he reached the alley the two men stepped out and confronted him.
" Kind o' frosty tonight." Remarked one of them.
" Yes." Replied Poole, as he started to walk on.
" Wait a minute." answered one of the robbers. " We're detectives and we want to talk to you."

Poole stopped again, saying, " If you are detectives, you'll have to produce your credentials."
" Will this do ?" Inquired one of the robbers as he pointed a pistol at Poole's head.
" If it will not." said the second robber. " Maybe this will." And he, too, drew a revolver from his pocket.

" Now hold up your hands and be quiet, or you'll go to the morgue." Spoke up one of the robbers.

Poole made no outcry and submitted to a search of his pockets. After taking his money the robbers ran down the alley, warning Poole not to follow them.

Poole hurried to the Four Courts. The description of the robbers as given by Poole tallies with that of the two men who robbed Joseph W Mosier, a Nebraska stockman, just a block further west Wednesday night at the same time.
