There's not much different in size. I always have wonder why Kansas City is so much more gracious and peaceful/beautiful a city over St Louis.

^^ Great description. I think KC ppl seem nicer than STL ppl and are closer to the stereotype of what Midwesterners are like. It's refreshing. I don't know much about the degree of white flight in KC compared to STL but that obviously changed STL dramatically in the 20th century. Also, the boundaries of KC seem to be liberally drawn. It seems like the outskirts of KC would be areas categorized as suburbs when applied to STL. And KC obviously has less Great Lakes/Chicago influence.

St. Louis is much bigger than Kansas City if we are talking metro area populations.

It's not. They are no different in terms of peacefulness or graciousness. Beauty is in they eye of the beholder, though, and the 2 towns do look quite a bit different, so you may very well feel, as I do, that KC is a better looking or more beautiful city. Lots of people feel the exact opposite. But in terms of people, they are both mid-western cities with very culturally midwestern populations. But they are fairly different in size. StL is about 1.5 times the size of KC.

And StL is more dense across the entire metro. It has a more "big" city feel to it. KC only has a big city feel in parts of the metro.

St. Louis is bigger and older. It's had more opportunity to develop that big city je ne sais quoi. Give KC an extra million people and about 100 years and you'll get there too.

Meh. KC Urbanized Area is 2241.6 ppsm, St Louis is 2328.5. Pretty marginal.
