We are a hockey family hoping to relocate to the MSP area. We currently reside in Beaverton, OR - a suburb of Portland. Hoping to find a good elementary school (for a 3-4 grade), great youth hockey opportunities, and a family-oriented neighborhood. Is is feasible to find a decent home in the $260-300K range? I'd be working in the city, so hoping for a reasonable commute. Any advice would be terrific!

You're looking on living in the Saint Anthony neighborhood of Saint Paul. As for finding youth hockey ops in Saint Paul, you can pretty much throw a rock and you'll probably hit 3 parks before the rock hits the ground.

Where exactly will you be working? There are many, many communities that will fit what you are looking for so lets find one close to where you work. I don't know of a town here that doesn't have a hockey program so that should be the least of your worries.

Looking at an opportunity with an A/E firm on Cedar St. in Saint Paul. Are there other areas that might meet our criteria? We are pretty easy to please; easy commute to the City and awesome hockey/school programs are our key interests. Thank you for your assistance!

Would you want to live in Saint Paul or a suburb? The city itself is very safe and clean and is often voted as one of the most livable cities in America. Saint Paul suburbs are nice too, but I find that commuting into Saint Paul can actually be more of a hassle than commuting into Minneapolis. If I could give advice, I'd say look at the Crocus Hill neighborhood or Macalester-Groveland. Luckily, Saint Paul and Portland have a very similar vibe so the transition should be easy. Good luck!

I had to chuckle because yes, you could not even throw a rock, just toss one gently & still find hockey, it's like a religion here! I don't know St. Paul, but best of luck to you!

If hockey was a religion in Minnesota, I bet these would be the commandments.

Thou shall not honor the name of Todd Bertuzzi or Norman Green. For they have brought great suffering to our area.
Thou shall not honor the name of Gary Bettman. He simply sucks, even if he did provide us with a new team.
Thou shall not cheer for the Chicago Blackhawks, for even if our new team does not play in our division. They're from Chicago and they should ALWAYS be cheered against.

This is just terrific to hear! We are hockey fanatics, my son plays, and Portland is not much of a hockey town. In fact, it seems our local rink is going to close. Tme to come to a place where we can be surrounded by hockey. Because we currently live in a suburb, I was thinking it might suit us best. But, if communting to Minneapolis is easier, I'd like to consider surburban areas there too. I commute to Portland right now; takes 45 mins door-to-door (each way) on a bus. Are there areas around MP where you can purchase decent housing for approx. $260k in a family-oriented neighborhood?
