I just got a job offer in Minneapolis and it seemed kinda low compared to the cost of housing and taxes. I now live in Tampa, FL where my 56K does okay, but when I got the job offer of 63K in Minneapolis, I started to wonder about the move.

I have used some of the cost of living calculators, but they really say that the difference is minor. I am not interested in buying as the Fl real estate market left me wanting to rent for awhile, yet I do want to rent a decent place in the city, with at least 3 bds. Please help me out.

Is 63K a decent salary there if I don't want to pay more than 1400 in rent? No kids and engaged.

Thanks in advance.

You can do ok on 63K if you are single and renting is ok. $1400 might be cutting it close for a 3 bedroom but there are some out there. It will come down to where you live and how you live really. Where is the job and what kind of place would you like to live in-urban, suburban, rural?

I save over half my paycheck on 65K, although my rent situation is considerably cheaper ($600) and I drive a used car. Heating costs are roughly equiv to what you pay for a/c down there so it cancels out.

You will be fine on $63K around here. And a 3 BR in a decent neighborhood for $1,400 will not be a problem.

3 bedroom for 1400 is definitely doable. Forrent and Apartmentfinder are excellent magazines, but they charge u for shipping for ordering one online. I reccommend looking at those for more typical big apartment complexes, and places like craigslist for other smaller privately owned buildings.

Yes, 63k should be fine. But I'm not sure it is worth moving for $7000. Personally I would stay in sunny Florida. You know about the Winters here, right?

Florida may be sunny, but that doesn't make it perfect or better then Minnesota. You couldn't pay me to live in Florida.

Thanks for the replies. I understand the winters can be harsh...I grew up in Chicago and attended school in Iowa so Florida was actually the shock. As the old saying goes: all that glitters ain't gold. Florida's economy is gasping for air right now and I don't know when it will recover.
