Elderly couple contemplating a move from Hawaii to Minneapolis area.
Our reason for moving is to be closer to relatives.
We would prefer a furnished apartment building located in the
West or southest suburbs.
Any advice will be appreciated.
Thank you.

Any specific towns you want to be near, activities you participate in? Do you drive? What size town are you looking for? Just trying to narrow things down. How much do you want to spend on rent? Also, there are a lot of townhomes/condos for sale that are dirt cheep, would you consider buying one?

Do they (you?) drive? That is probably the most important consideration...

Yes, I am a licensed driver. We feel being near a medical doctor and/or hospital is important.

Until we are sure we want to be in an area, we prefer to rent a furnished apartment. Size of the community is not important.

Centennial Lakes in Edina comes to mind. There are a lot of housing opportunities in that area of Edina that are geared toward active older people. Centennial Lakes

It's near a hospital with a major heart center, YMCA and shopping. The City of Edina is working hard to make it more walking-friendly as well with some new paths.

The place that is right up along the lake is the Village Homes of Edinborough.

This is what came to my mind as well.

There is a 55 and over community in the Evermoor Development in Rosemount. It is a condo association but it is possible there may be one to rent. The problem is finding a furnished apartment. It has been a long time since I have been in the apartment market but typically the furnished apartments have been in the not so nice complexes. I do know that there are some corporate moving companies that will furnish apartments for people that they move but then they charge quite a bit for it. A friend did that about 15 years ago and was paying $2500/month for an apartment that was going for $900/month. The extra included the furniture and utilities but for the extra's for one month you could buy new at a place that sells cheep furniture like Slumberland then when you don't need it any longer, sell it.

Anything facing Centennial Lakes or attached to Edenborough park would be condos. Some of the surrounding buildings may be rentals, however. There's a new apartment complex around 62 & Hwy 100 - they look like they started out as townhomes and then changed to rentals with the economy? I haven't checked them out but they look pretty nice and are close to Fairview Southdale.

At least some of those condos are available for rent, though. It probably depends on the building (as not all condo buildings may allow renting), but I think at least some of those ones around Southdale do rent. It would be hit-or-miss whether it was furnished or not, depending on owner.
