In addition to Stillwater, I'd also suggest looking into White Bear Lake. WBL has a nice little downtown, an interesting mix of 1910s-1930s homes, and is along a large lake. Its also a little closer in than Stillwater.

Mahtomedi is one of the best districts in the state and Stillwater isn't far behind. Stillwater has more in town for shopping and whatnot, Mahtomedi is closer to the mall and work. White Bear Lake is a nice area too but the Mahtomedi and Stillwater schools are nicer. Another option would be the Mounds View area (district is the same name--typically you will find that most school districts go by the town names around here).

Keep in mind that the difference between the top 20 or so districts around the metro area is probably a percentage point or two in test scores-nothing very significant. Most people choose a place to live because of proximity to work and then the activities for their kids.

Ok, I just looked at where your DH's office will be--basically 280 and 94--Mahtomedi would be my first choice for you. Another option would be to look in the Eagan area if you are looking for a good commuting spot to live given where his office is but it doesn't have the charm or quaintness of Mahtomedi or Stillwater.

North Oaks may be a good option as well. It's part of the Mounds View school district. Your price range would put you in the lower end of the neighborhood but that isn't bad.

North Oaks may be one of the least walkable areas in the metro area, unless the OP was referring to walking through an endless maze of huge homes.

If the OP let us know what her priorities are in that $550K home, it would be easier to pinpoint.

1.) For instance, age of home, size of home, how much land is desired. Do you want a 2000 or newer or a 1920's re-done with it's charm?
2.) Close to shopping and restaurants... What caliber? A fast food restaraunt and a bigger strip mall or 5 city blocks worth of unique shopping?
3.) Do you have the budget for private school.

Puttin it another way, what did you own in IN??

The suggestion for the Summit Ave. area is exceptional. But if she wants a 2004 build or newer that won't fit the bill. Plus, I'd assume the Summit Ave home owners have their Kid's in private school. Just a guess...
