Ok, that was an extremely broad question. I'll get more into depth. I'm looking for a neighborhood with nice DECENT priced apartments. There also needs to be a few stores so I don't have to drive 10 miles to get to one. I don't know which neighborhood I should choose. Diversity in the neighborhood wouldn't hurt.

You're still going to MCTC, right? And you don't want to live near downtown anymore? I think you'll be OK in NE Minneapolis, AKA "Nordeast." And stop worrying so much! You'll be fine.

The most diverse communities in Minneapolis are Phillips, Near-North, Powderhorn and Camden. According to 2008 crime stats without larcency (per the recent crime topic)your safest bet is Powderhorn (if you go by total reported cases of homicide, rape, robbery, aggassault, burglary, auto-theft and arson divided by population).

As being a resident of Powderhorn I highly recommend the area. You'd be 3-4 miles from downtown and you can meet all of your shopping needs on the main thoroughfares. Powderhorn is along the light rail, and close to lots of lakes, parks, bike paths, the river, etc.

The Nokomis area is somewhat diverse - not so much as some other areas, it skews older and whiter than the other areas mentioned and is not quite so trendy (no coffee shops) - and is amongst the safest in Minneapolis. From where I live (54th & 34th) I can walk at most 4 or 5 blocks to what I need and there is frequent bus service that ties in to the Light Rail and I can bike to the Mississippi River parkway, Minnehaha creek, and two lakes (Nokomis, Hiawatha) all of which have walking and bike trails.

Here's a thought - sit down with the metro transit transit maps, the MPD crime maps for Minneapolis, and go to Google maps and look up "coffee shop" with Minneapolis displayed. The transit maps will show not only the bus routes but you can also make a rough guess that affordable apartments will be near where most of them run - if an area is served by 5 routes there will be more affordable rentals than if it is served by 1 or 2. The crime maps will strike out the really aweful parts, and then the google map showing coffee shops will show the trendy, interesting areas (you can also look up bread shop and other places that mark "trendiness"). You can then get a close up view of the area with google street view. There's also walkscore.com (or you can download google earth) to get an idea of how walkable a neighborhood is by seeing what shops are close by.

safe is not about downtown or money. safe is where people feel there is a problem in their neighborhood and they act. instead of others feeling their is a problem in that neighborhood and avoid. its not about the strong eating the strong, its about the strong defending the weak.
when that happens everyplace will be disneyland.
i have a dream.
