We are considering to move to Minneapolis with kids soon. And we found online some apartments we like. But alot of people on twitter told me Uptown is not a safe area because of nightlife. I want to know your opinion. Thanks

You've received some bad information.

yes, there is a very healthy restaurant and bar scene in this area, but it is concentrated to the core of Uptown, and I wouldn't call it dangerous (calling it unsafe is really kind of weird). There are plenty of great neighborhoods around it, with housing options ranging from moderate to very high priced apartments to multi-million dollar single family homes.

To me, it is the best of all worlds: single family houses with big yards, apartments, young people, old people, rich people, college kids, families, singles, lakes!, restaurants, bars, retail, etc.

It's a pretty unique place.

It isn't cheap though if you want a nice place.

Don't take their word for it. Check the crime maps. I quick looked at 3, didn't see what I'd call a lot of activity there.

I'm wondering if they meant more "not family friendly" because of the bar scene vs "safe".

I live in CARAG and you definitely need to remember that you live in the city. Lots of break-ins, stolen cars, petty theft etc. Violent crime once in a while. Just be smart, watch yourself and your stuff and you should be fine.

For what it's worth, I would have never characterized East Calhoun as unsafe! As Chain of Lakes said, that's kind of weird. It sounds like the opinion of an exurbanite who rarely goes into the city because "it's all creepy."

Yes, there is nightlife. But it's not like a neighborhood full of dive bars! There are some very nice restaurants in the area. And there are plenty of people on the streets there. Isn't that a characteristic of a healthy neighborhood?

I mean, is sitting on a lakeside dock watching the sun set over Lake Calhoun an example of "unsafe nightlife?" I think it's actually one of the more romantic neighborhoods in Minneapolis.

Yeh, I think those who live a distance from the city fantasize Blade Runner when they think what its like in town. There certainly are sections where gunplay is too frequent. But then there are places as peaceful as a lot of suburbs. Though I'd expect paranoid suburbanites to deny it.

There is more to crime than "gunplay" and many people just don't want to be invaded--the petty crime, assaults, and whatnot that are "common" according to people that live in the area just aren't for everyone.

You're saying "assaults". What "assaults"? I'm not sure what the "petty crime" in Uptown is. Nor do I get what it has to do with "being safe".
