Thanks for the tips. Perhaps we'll check out 6 month rentals too. I'm waiting for my green card to be processed (foreign citizen) so I can only come for three months then have to go back and pay for our separate rental at home (hope to sublease while away). However, my husband might enjoy a place of his own after we leave as he's living with friends at the moment. He could get a regular rental since we'll all be living in the US permanently starting sometime next year, but I like the idea of getting something furnished so we don't have to worry about that during our short stay. Also, it gets expensive renting two places.

We've rented before in the Cities (several years) and my budget isn't too small for a regular rental, I know that. We just need something decent in a safe neighborhood, nothing fancy or even nice. Though my husband works in expensive parts, we just need to be within commuting distance.

Rental prices have gone up quite a bit and for a 2 bedroom rental in a decent/safe area, $900 is not going to cut it. It might work ok for a not so nice place in an ok area for a one bedroom but with 2 kids you have to get at least a 2 bedroom because of zoning laws pretty much everywhere in the metro.

If you can swing a 6 month lease, I really think that is something to consider. Again, the short term leases will be tough to find, and again will want a premium since they know you'll be moving out and they'll have to re-clean and re-rent.

As far as the amount, while I guess it somewhat depends on what you are calling "safe and decent", I don't think the $900/month for a 2BR is unrealistic. You may be in an older building or perhaps somewhat smaller unit, but I did a quick Padmapper search for 2BR, up to $950, and ZIP 55435 (generally Edina). A number of places popped up to search. In fact, there is a 3BR unit on 59th and Washburn for 1100 sq.ft at $900/month. Unfortunately, it is available immediately so may not work for you.
