My boyfriend and I have planned a trip for me to see him in Japan. Im scheduled to leave in 8 days (9 days his time).
He called me this morning and told me that his paperwork for leave was taking a while....I would have thought that it would have gone through by now? We've had the ticket for a little over a month...is this just the Navy being slow, or should I begin to kiss my trip goodbye?

Everything is set up. Credit cards notified, school notified...everything. Im really worried now.

Any ideas? Advice?

Unless he is about to deploy or something came up with the unit he is assigned to, his leave should be approved. Of course it all comes down to manning (having enough staff to complete the mission) or even discipline issues. The Navy tries hard to give the sailors leave, because the Navy knows they need time off to rest.

I would advise your boyfriend to make sure his Chief knows that you are coming out and this would be a financial burden on you if it was not approved. If there are no outstanding circumstances, the Chief should be able to push this through.

I had leave papers walked through in a day, and I have had them sat on for 2-3 weeks before being approved.

USNRET04 gave the best advice, make sure his Chief knows what is going on and how important it is.

Sometimes the amount of time it takes is related to how good of a sailor a person is. If they are good workers, liked by the chain of command, you can usually get what you want rather quickly, if you are a troublemaker then sometimes it takes longer just because they can.

-----his paperwork for leave was taking awhile --

-----"the Chief should be able to push this through"--

I had the same thing happen when I was in.

Bask then the procedure was you went to Personal Office and they wrote the number of earned days you had coming and you filled out the leave chit and gave it to the Dept chief. It then worked its way through the other places that had to sign off and ended up at Personal Office who had all your paperwork ready for you to pick up when your leave started.

This was the procedure we were told to follow !

A day before my leave was to start, I droppen in at Personal Office to see if my leave papers were ready.
They had no info and told me to backtrack the chain.

I did, no one had seen them.

I ended all the way back to my Dept Chief and he dug thru some papers and found my chit on his desk -------where he put it 3 weeks earlier when I gave it to him.

I had to quickly " walk" my chit thru the process to get it done in one day.

Did the Chief apologize?----NO !

He gave me the------" I don't give a damn" look.

I guess he figured it wasn't --his--leave, and therefore wasn't important.

I agree with the above responses. I work for the Navy but am not IN the Navy and it's the same with our enlisted here, if they want leave papers approved, it's usually the same week - on the rare occasion it's taken a few weeks but not usually. We do have a very small clinic here though and it's well manned.
Good luck!!

This is not specific to any branch of the military you can easily get screwed when it comes to taking leave. It is definitely easier and faster to get things approved if you "know people" or are in admin. What others have said is right he should start asking questions.

Even if it gets approved it can always be cancelled at the last minute.

I hope I can talk to him again really soon to pass this info on. I'll only get to see him once a year for the next 3 years, so this is really important to both of us.

Im sure he'll start bugging someone though. He's a Nuke, so he's not stupid.

My worst fear is that I'll get on that plane, it will get cancelled last minute, and I'll be stuck there in a foreign country by myself with very little way to call home or get help.

There are some muscle head NCO's that love to 'f' with those that have somehow gotten on their "not my favorites list", and sit on or deny requests for no other reason than the can.

Is he STATIONED in Japan? If so, he should have free time more often than not...depending on how many duty sections he's under.

"Liberty call, liberty call..."what every sailor loves to hear.
