LMAO I closed down Gaylord? The shopping center outside of town has been vacant since it was built in 2005. Only thing there is Office Max. Old Navy lasted a couple years and the rest of it sat vacant. Walmart moved to its new location long before I arrived.

It looks quite beautiful!
Awe man your killin me! Like I said...it just feels right when were there, cant explain it...but we just know its where we will end up. My wife just got promoted in her Medical billing job to manager, and now there is talk maybe another promotion next year, so we need to stay at least till we see whats up, or just take our chances that she can get a job up there, which I have no doubt she can. Either way...thats where we will end up, but cant be soon enough.

So are you saying Gaylord isn't half empty? Are you sayign Gaylord's 30k median income and social assistance as a leading industry is a good thing? This is reality. You have the worst delusional thinking I have ever witnessed. This imaginary small town of yours with prospering business is nowhere within range of Gaylord.

Scolls...Im serious, you have a real problem and should probably be checked out by a doctor. I did not, nor have I ever said Gaylord is prospering. I said my small town of over 16% unemployment has new jobs coming. I never mentioned Gaylord. I believe this just shows you go out of your way to blast Gaylord or any other place thats not to your liking. Are you on medication for depression? If not maybe you should be because your outlook on life is horrible.

What is this small town you speak of? It's not anything with a 5 county radius of Gaylord.

There is more to do in Detroit than go to a ball game and hit up the casinos. There are some truly excellent festivals and entertainment. The Detroit Institute of Arts is one of the better art museums in the nation, the music scene in Detroit is superb (for all types of music), excellent restaurants, wonderful history. True, it's a picture of urban decay in many spots, but it's not worth overlooking. When someone says all the good of Detroit moved out to the suburbs, it's just a way of perpetuating the disconnect between the city and burbs that led to the area's financial meltdown and segregation in many ways. Detroit has oodles more flavor than most of its suburbs and Michigan won't come back without it. That said, there are some very nice suburbs, and mid-size cities. Grand Rapids, Ann Arbor, Traverse City, Kalamazoo, Marquette - there are many places to choose from.
I would say an $80,000 combined income in Traverse City would be more than sufficient to live comfortably and own a nice home - and that is certainly enough for most other areas of the state as well.
People who do find consistent work in Michigan are able to live quite comfortably and save on money. There is a lot of recreation to be had in a short drive, even from Detroit. Cost of living is low, cost of housing is low. Michigan doesn't have any wildfires, earthquakes, or other major natural disasters of note compared with much of the rest of the nation. There are tornados, but not at the level in other spots. The area has a lot to offer. However, it has a long way to go. There are some truly, truly great problems in the state. Michigan needs industry, urban makeovers and an overhaul of the inept state government (and in Detroit's case, city government) for it to prosper again. And even in that case, it'll likely never see the wealth of the automobile era. But I hope the state will attract a different kind of person: Self-sufficient and forward thinking. We don't need any more fat cats or McMansions. That kind of lifestyle just won't cut it in Michigan anymore.
