My mother grew up on Union street and 10th whew now there is medical bulding is now. And my Grandfather went to St. Joseph. they are now buried in Mount Hope. My sister and i will be taking a vacation in may and the plan is to move to Port Huron. I know every city had it's bad parts but it look like Port Huron is changing for the better.

25 years ago I had been looking for work in Port Huron and hoping to get out of the big city.

There were NO jobs to be had up there, even back then.

I really don't see a comparison between PH and Livonia . PH is a town with its own downtown, neighborhoods (old and new, rich and poor, and everything in between) and surrounded by agriculture where the river (which is also an international border) is not in the way, while Livonia is a Detroit suburb with more suburbs beyond it.

Port Huron seems to lack tourism or a strong identity. People like cities that draw visitors in. Port Huron is just kind of there without a reason. It doesnt fully utilize its waterfront like it could. It lacks a distinct culture or economy. Traverse City has cherries, Holland has tulups, Ann Arbor has an eclectic mix due to its university population. PH also doesnt seem to have great access to a lot of economic opportunities.
Most people I've met from PH didn't like it. They thought it was too small and boring.
I apologize to area residents but my impression of the city from my last few visits was that it had a lot of poverty and a lot of possible vagrancy and substance abuse. I summed it up to that general lack of opportunity.

Born and raised in Port Huron. Had to move to Tucson because my wife couldn't find work. If we can, we will move back to there or somewhere in the thumb.

I was born in 1980. I remember when the downtown was much busier and very active. I grew up 2 blocks from the bridge. I think what has hurt the town the most has been the loss of manufacturing jobs. This has largely been because of poor U.S. trade policy. Also, the city lost revenue when the commercial sector moved to Fort Gratiot to dodge taxes, since the mall was built and all the businesses moved there the town has declined economically.

Most of the affluent people that remain have moved to a neighboring township, St. Clair or Marysville. This has caused some of the brain drain in the area. Its still a wonderful town with a lot of good people, but it is being hurt by bad policies that are past the city's control.
