Oh, no offense meant, seriously- you no doubt know your way around really well- whereas the OP may not- and I don't know about him/her, but I would really hate to take a wrong turn in Detroit somewhere, that could be somewhat disastrous!

All areas of Michigan are beautiful. But if i had to pick the best probably the U.P and all those Islands up there ie Makinac, manitou islands ect anything in northern michigan is gorgeous. We have some of the best sand dunes especially Silver Lake Dunes if you are father south on the west side closer to ludington GR ect farther north u wanna check out sleeping bear. The thumb area is great and the west coast of Michigan in general is pretty nice. Plenty of outdoorsy activities to do here!

The best that I have personally seen requires a little footwork. It's at the Sleeping Bear Dunes NL that so many others have mentioned - you find the parking lot of the Empire Bluff Trail along M-22, than walk it to its terminus on a high dune overlooking a point, resulting in great views not only of Sleeping Bear Dune and the Manitou Islands (to the north), but Empire itself (to the north and down) and Platte bay (to the southwest).

Nostalgia - off the little winding road into Empire. Never walked it though.
I like the little park at the end of Trail End Road with the canoe launch.
Don't get me started.
