Well, then what's the "culture" of Miami?

I'm an outsider that's never visited, but I hear the same things about it being a tourist party town with poor people struggling below the poverty line.

What's the culture like?

Oooooo Keyboard Tough Guy!!!! I guess I offended you with my view on Miami and the lack (even though that Chili's buy one get one free coupon you posted is enticing) of free, family friendly events in Miami. While you, ***MOD CUT***, said a picnic in the park or a trip to the beach is free, i'm talking about events. While you also got lucky and stumbled upon "young arts week", there are 51 other weeks in the year where, according to you, I can go watch 51 movies for free on friday nights and so-on.

However, you choose to berate someone who was a resident of Miami, with children, who had difficulties finding things to do on the weekends in Miami without having to pay a lot. I could choose to say that you, as a retiree who splits his time between Nevada and Miami shouldn't be commenting on events geared towards families and children, but I won't, because unlike you, I didn't come here looking for a fight.

Thanks for all that "research" you did for me. I could have easily gone to google.com myself, but I was too busy enjoying all the free, family fun events DC has to offer.

Floridian here, 49, 3 years currently living in east Ft. Laud. I own a nice Condo here. My profession is independent int'l real estate adviser and photo journalist. I am retired. I work to meet people and stay busy. I've followed the Dade and Broward property market since 2008 steadily.

Most of South Florida, from West Palm to South Miami or Dadeland area is foreign investors and buyers, and low class immigrants since the late 70s. We have our own market here unlike most of US. Contractors and all persons working in the property remodeling industry are doing very well. Homes are up 25% each year since the 08 crash. Wealthy foreigners bring their money here because their own countries are too corrupt. Their money comes here and they must invest for tax and immigration reasons. Rich for foreigners drive up RE prices and the middle class is eroding away. You are either living in near the beach in a $1M home or $800k 2/2 condo - no joke!

Traffic here has become worse over the years, and people are aggressive. You have a lot of things that come in to play here, the bad economy that is hitting the low and middle class hard, angry immigrants that can't get ahead and pushy people / retirees from NE USA ( NY, NJ, CT ). And the stiffling humidity in the summer is enough to put any sane person in a bad mood.

People who come here and vacation 3 days or 1 month, they don't see what's really happening here. You have to live and work here for at least 1 year to really get a grip.

I am looking to move on. I'm tired of pushy yanks and rude immigrants. People here have very few manners. Living here has made me a pushy person, and I have unfortunately, changed to become pushy myself. Frankly I can't wait to leave ....

That is my two cents worth.

Imported money. A lot of money is spent here that isn't made here.

Also, a lot of this wealthy influx immigrant money coming not only from Latin America, but also Russia and Asia. My estimation is at least 65% of these wealthy foreigners coming to Miami, made their money illegally, like the Mafia, corrupt Casinos, prostitution, Cocaine, etc ... Sunny Isles, and the Euros and Russians who live there in my opinion have accumulated their wealth in the underworld of their home country. The Cocaine industry in Colombia is bigger than ever. And, low class immigrants, the money they make here, most goes back via Western Union to " The Family " in Mexico. The wealthy Dezer family in Sunny Isles, the elder, or the Old Man, an immigrant with rumors tied to the Israeli underworld of drugs, illegal arms re-selling and trafficking of Narcotics.

As a Floridian and 5th generation American, I don't like this but I accept it ....

I wasn't looking for a fight either; I was honestly trying to help you find things for you and your family to do here in Miami. Little did I realize that you don't even live here and were just posting for no real reason whatsoever. Oh, and by the way, I was born and raised here, and spent part of the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s living here before moving to the DC area for 25 years (while still returning to Miami on a regular basis to visit friends and family). So I'm more than familiar with what both areas have to offer families. The fact that you weren't able to find ways to entertain your family speaks to your shortcomings moreso than the city's.

Now you may have the last word because I'm through wasting any more time on you.

What makes miami so expensive?

Heres your answer:

Supply and demand, Miami is a tourist destination, with beautiful weather and beautiful beaches, Miami is located off of the Caribbean which means we are neighbors to a lot of latin american countries. Not only is it a desirable place for Americans because of it's tropical climate, but also that means people from neighboring countries want to immigrant here since it is so close. Where does that take Miami ? It means more and more people for the area, well that means there needs to be more JOBS to stimulate the local economy.

Because Miami mostly boosts it's economy with Entertainment or Tourism, that leaves a limited amount of jobs to cover the population growth within the city, because you can only have so many people working that same job. Let's also not forget, parts of Dade county are more expensive because they are by the coast. Anything more by the coast equals more money, because there is limited supply for the demand.

So because there isn't enough jobs for normal people to survive, the rest of miami looks like hell, well the parts by the coast or the nice areas (such as brickell/downtown) , are only ment for rich people. So that leaves you with a city that has no middle class and only poor/rich, with the rich of course dominating it, so in order to enjoy it, you better have money.

Now, where did Miami get all the capital to build all these buildings like they did? Miami is home to many latin american banks, meaning, many latin americans move money back and fourth between the countries. Some people think all of this has to do with the cocaine trade which is a very plausible reason, if you learn about Miami in the 80s you will see Miami was home to some of the biggest drug trades in history, and still is til this day, with that comes money, a lot of "over the seas" money.

Beaches, weather, women. Now, I know that may not be your cup of tea, but for MILLIONS of American AND foreign tourist, it is their cup of tea. Miami may not be NYC, or DC, but for some folks, all they want are beaches, women, clubs, and weather. And Miami has plenty of culture. Culture is so subjective.

I just wish the people in Miami were much more civilized. Miami would be a much better place.
