Incidents like this should make national news. A crackdown is well overdue. No one wants to take responsibility at local government level.

If so many hit & runs happened elsewhere, there would have been a major crackdown. It's going to get to the point where big brother measures become necessary in order to save lives and get the plethora o scumbag drivers (criminals) off our streets, permanently.

I would have cameras installed en-masse at almost every major intersection and I'd introduce speed cameras.

If this even means giving local and state police additional powers to stop drivers at random and without cause for proof of insurance and drivers' license, I would not be against that (although I would be against it anywhere else, where the majority of people drive responsibly and don't make a mockery of the law, endangering life). If such measures are implemented, blame your fellow Miami drivers for the perceived loss of freedom.

Doing nothing is no longer an option, even if you love Miami. What if this were to happen to your partner, your parent or your child? I'm glad they caught the vile POS though. Now it's up to the courts to deal with him (hopefully harshly). These kind of crimes are as bad as murder and depending on how you look at it, it *is* murder and we need to refer to these people as "criminals", not just drivers.

Your suggestions are pretty extreme ..... but I guess I would have to agree with you .... South Fla and Miami in particular are out of control with the scumbag drivers and the police either do not have the resources to deal with it or do not seem to care .. I am up in the NE every other month and even though the police sometimes behave like the gestapo and wear uniforms that look like they are invading Poland .. they do their job and you feel safer up there ... Mass police for example would never allow rampant hit and runs like you have down here .

Hey Rock,

This is something I feel very strongly about. I find Miami a very scary place to drive and it's gotten worse over the last few years (much more aggression coupled with the pre-existing stupidity and recklessness). I don't think I am bashing Miami, rather the behavior of many of her residents. I wouldn't usually support big brother measures, but it seems like many Miamians are practically begging for them by driving in such an awful manner and breaking the law. While politicians and law enforcement don't do enough now, that will eventually change and such a change may be a change too far.

The City Of Miami is already following other cities by installing traffic signal cameras to catch red light runners. While most oppose this and naturally doubt the city's intentions (because of course it's all about $$$), the cameras would never have been installed and would not even have been financially feasible if Miami didn't have such a problem with red light running.

In other words, those who ***** and complain about such cameras should blame the drivers who run red lights, because they have become the latest cash cow.

Another way of combating the problem of unlicensed and uninsured drivers is to place more responsibility on sellers of automobiles to demand a license and proof of insurance before selling a car. Also, those who willingly lend out their vehicle to another (uninsured) party should be held accountable.

Like I said, the problem has become so bad that I would gladly see a law passed giving the police more powers to stop whoever the hell they feel like to either breathalize or check for drivers license and insurance documentation. Peace of mind is more important to me than some idiot claiming their rights are trampled upon. Said idiots can go take it up with the average douchebag Miami driver who has flaunted with the law for far too long.
