So I moved to Brickell in May and love it here....unfortunately there is a once vacant lot at the corner of SE 6th Street & S Miami Avenue that has turned into a homeless camp. I have called the NON emergency number every week for the past 3 weeks and nothing has been done........Any suggestions............

Miami Coalition for the Homeless

maybe the coalition has an answer as to why they camp out in that particular spot, get right to the source. stop acting like they're animals you can't even talk to or something.

The city cannot do anything if they're on public property, and if they're on private property I would imagine the property owner would have to call.

Regardless, this is one issues, as a city, we need to come up with a solution to. We cannot turn our backs to those less fortunate.

Yes we can turn our back on them. Homeless people are offered every possible bit of assistance that can be given to them from both government and private parties. Most of them refuse it all. It's their fault they are where they are.

I suggest you go out and talk to some, or at the very least watch a documentary or two about the homeless in Miami.

I hope for your sake you're never down on your luck, and if you ever are, you don't run into somebody as callous as you.

I believe there are plenty of organizations out there to help people get back on their feet. I dontate plenty of money to these groups. The fact is unfortunately many on the street turn this assistance down in favor of living on the streets, robbing, begging and getting drunk.

Please name them.

You also need to realize many charities are not good charities. I got a call about donating to some breast cancer charity. I told them sure, send me the information and I would send them a check. Got the info in the mail, looked them up and low and behold a whopping 20% of donations went to the actual cause, while 80% went to "administrative costs."

Watch this video, and I mean really watch it. Don't just say you did. It will only take about 11 minutes of your time.

Homeless Camps are hard to get rid of. Calling the non emergency line was a good start. If it were one homeless person, I know the cops will move them along, but a whole camp that is tuff. Call and write your county commissioner, the mayors office, call the local news stations, call the police chief, basically write and call anyone that you can think of that has some power to make a change. Best of Luck!

i'd rather shoot the crap with a homeless person who's got something interesting / humorous / heartfelt to say, than the snotty jerks like chewie who think they're better than everyone else. in actuality, you're blessed to have that homeless camp there, but instead of seeing it that way, you've put up a great wall around you to protect yourself against who, the less fortunate? give me a break. get real.
