I had an S500 from 2003 - 2007. It didn't give me a lick of trouble. At the time, mercedes still had free maintenance anyway. As much as I enjoyed it, in hindsight, it was a lot of money to spend on a car. I doubt I will spend that kind of dough on a car again.

My other one is still a youngster with only 160,000 on it, but I had to change the Ball Joints and U-joints this year on that one. Must drive it harder . Let us know with the M-B when you top 150k and still problem free.
Maybe you're not aware, but people who drive Benzes generally arent looking to keep them for 200,000 miles...

Planned prior to purchase or determined after the first 10k plus miles of grief and frustration, JHG?

I drive a Nissan, Audi, and BMW, so dont look at me...(although I'm planning on purchasing an S and CLS in the future). For styling, Mercedes is unmatched. The potential grief/frustration is worth it. I wouldn't care (to a point...)

Buying a Mercedes-Benz is like pissing your pants. Only you can feel the warmth, and everyone else is just embarrassed for you.

25 years ago I would have agreed: the new Benzes look 'ghetto' to me-----------although BMW, Lexus, etc. are just as bad IMHO.

As for reliability: what chaps my hide is seeing a ca. 2001 M-B, BMW, etc. with 100K miles on it and the thing is already falling to pieces whereas a same year Honda Accord 4 cylinder with that same mileage still 'feels' almost new.

Note I am an auto alignment tech and deal with many different varieties of cars/light trucks daily.

AZB -
Would like your professional opinion - I am looking for a 4 door sedan that drives well (V6 power, Good handling) has some entry level luxury touches (Leather, Nav, Nice interior) and I want it to run problem free for 10 years & 150 - 200k miles, what do you reccomend?

The paint is always a shocker to me, Bear.

What's with so many relatively new Mercedes here in the Desert Southwest with "frosted" paint?

I understand proper maintenance is a major issue, however, my 18 year old RED Chevy Silverado never appeared frosted or sandblasted.
