Lot's of information. I knew someone on island in the car sales business who connected me to a great gently used car with 100k warranty including service for the next 4 years, and got me 8k off the sticker price, so it all worked out today

Next on to finding a great place I want to live. They want to rent to me, but they places....hmmm.....

A place I looked at upcountry was an attached ohana, screaming baby and 3 yappy dogs, 5 broken down cars in the yard. Back house had 3 studios! One resident jumped out and looked scary....wild hair and crack like look in his eyes. A few others were beautiful and reasonably priced at 1100-1500 but don't take a dog.

Tough to find a place to take a small well behaved dog....but I will keep trying

Here's the story about that. On most properties in Maui County, you are allowed to have one house, and one ohana (detached or attached). There are situations where having multiple dwellings/ ohanas are possible, but they are rare and likely only found on very large parcels of land, multiple acres. Thus its likely the 3 studios you saw are illegal. What does that mean to you? If a neighbor gets fed up with the noise, for instance, they can call the zoning department and file a complaint. The inspector will come out to see the illegal situation, and promptly evict everyone. No 30 day notice - just pack your bags buddy. The same can be true on properties that have only one ohana if the ohana was built without a permit, many of which exist. Believe me, the landlord is not going to warn you ahead of time that the dwelling is illegal.

For this reason, I suggest calling the zoning enforcement department at the county (808) 270-7253 before signing any lease. Give them the address, describe the main house and ohana(s) arrangement and ask them if it's all legal. You can look up properties on the county tax website (Aloha and welcome to the County of Maui’s Real Property Tax Assessment Website) to get an idea of the legality, but they are only partially helpful as they tax all structures, legal or not, and could care less about the zoning enforcement side. Thus call the zoning guys. They will know the real story.

I would *never* sign a lease on an illegal structure. Never.

As for the dog. Welcome to Maui. Your pool of rental options will be lessoned by 90%+ because of the poor little fellow. There is little incentive for a landlord to take on the noise, fleas, and liability associated with renting to a dog owner when there are dogless folks lined up out the door to get the place. You see a "well behaved dog", they see an unnecessary headache.

Good Luck.

I can relate. It was a no brainer for me to ship my 2 year old truck. I wanted something familiar in an unfamiliar place and it seemed to help. When I found myself lonely and lost I would go for a drive in my familiar truck and it seemed to help.

There is simply just not as big of a selection for used cars on this island as there is on the Mainland or even Oahu. My roommate ships pallets of stuff from Oahu often.

Pukalani isn't safe? That's a first. The only place that isn't safe on Maui is the Valley.

And parts of Paukakalo, and well a few streets here and there.

Happy Valley in Wailuku has the worst reputation. But it's really no big deal. Pukalani is perfect fine.

Costco is pretty iffy - people fighting over the last gross of Charmin toilet paper and jockeying for parking spots. Very aggro.
