I don't like the look of the outside of most new builds. I think they look generic and cheap.

And I agree with those who have said they won't age well.

The aesthetics are indeed ugly. My main concern with the complicated roofs would be the extra maintenance in a future environment where there could be less quality roofers available as most young people in last two generations have been steered towards college rather than the trades.

My current roof has one ridge, one penentrating item (plumbing vent) and two spots requiring step flashing

Look at all those prime spots for potential roof leaks. Roofers can charge big bucks on those houses when the time comes to re-roof.

So we have our classic and contemporary categories of houses.
  • Capes
  • Gambrels
  • Victorians
  • Colonials
  • Ranches
  • Splits
  • Mid-century Moderns

What do we call this newest trend of throwing in every design option? I propose '21st Century Mishmash.' I have to wonder, do millenial architects actually create these monstrosities or are builders trying to perform both the role of architect and builder?

Whatever happened to keeping it classic
There is a 1850s house on my street and it has white walls and black roofs. The windows are still white, with black shutters.
I don’t know what the original colors are, probably more or less the same.

Just seems like the houses built decades ago or even centuries ago made more sense than the homes built today.

I think of McMansions as oversized colonials made of flimsy materials commonly built in the years leading up to the 2008 financial crisis (1990s to 2006). These latest developments are a step worse and much uglier than the McMansions from the pre-2008 era.

The question is why do people feel the need for such a big house especially when people have less kids than they used to. It's been discussed before that siblings used to share bedrooms. Now people have bedrooms and rooms they don't even use.
